READING PROPHETIC LITERATURE ON NAGUIB AL-KILANI’S ‘AZRA’ JAKARTA

This is a study which focused on novel ‘Azra’ Jakarta (Jakarta Girl) wrote by the famous Egyptian-born author, Naguib al-Kilani. Stemming from his status as an international Islamic writer , and a pioneer in Islamic literature in the Arab region, it is wise to believe that there is a rationale in doing research on his novel. This will contribute a better credibility for his work to become a proper model in any Islamic literary work at an international level. Jakarta becomes the main setting for this novel that depicts the chaotic moments during the Republic of Indonesia was experiencing tumultuous tension with GESTAPU/ G30S which later overruled by the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) in 1965. This research will primarily focused on the framework of Islamic Literature proposed by Kuntowijoyo earlier. The main ideas in Prophetic literature that will be highlighted on this study will be from the verse of 110 Surah Ali Imran which outlined three ethics, that is, amar ma‘ruf (humanization), nahy mungkar (liberation) and al-Iman billah (transcendence). If all these three Prophetic Ethics are applied in this novel, then the novel can be considered as kaffah which means the work is comprehensible and contains high clarity according to the principles outlined by the prophetic literature. From the analysis it is clearly showed that, this novel proves to be a work of art that stretches beyond what is proposed and highlighted by any prophetic literary works studied before.
