Abstract :
Abstract. This article reports the result of a research on the classification of hilly areas using slope information from geographic information system (GIS). Four GIS softwares were tested i.e. IDRISI32 for Windows, Erdas Imagine, ArcView, and GridAnalyser. The results of the study found that all the softwares produced different slope information, thus influencing the classification of hilly areas. The differences vary, ranging from as small as 0.04% (ArcView and GridAnalyser) to a large difference of 5.0% (IDRISI32 and ERDAS Imagine). Given the fact that different GIS software might produce different results, a comprehensive study should be carried out by the relevant agencies to set an acceptable tolerance value to be used as a general guide to all users.
