JUVENILE ANGIOFIBROMA: THE VALUE OF STAGING SYSTEMS FOR TREATMENT PLANNING AND FOLLOW - UP

Many authors have recognized the importance of a classification scheme in the planning and assessment of results of treatment of angiofibroma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of radiological staging in treatment planning and follow-up of patients of angiofibroma. Twenty two CT scans were examined for evaluation of specific tumour spread patterns. All patients were liistopathologically proven to have angiofibroma.lt was found that the tumour originated in all cases from , the pterygopalatine fossa with destruction of the base of medial pterygoid plate. Sphenoid sinus was the earliest and commonest sinus to be involved (82%), then the ethmoid sinus (50%) then the maxillary sinus (45% ). Extension to other sites were discussed. Considerable variations were found between different studies regarding the spread pattern. This was reflected on variations between the different staging systems, hence, standardizations for choice of surgical approaches for this condition can not be yet achieved.
