THE PERCEPTIONS OF THE SOCIAL STUDIES STUDENT TEACHERS ABOUT DEMOCRATIC TEACHER

The social studies teaching plays an important role to transmit knowledge and skills concerning democracy to students. For this reason, social studies student teachers should be given education about how to teach and transmit knowledge of democracy and democratic skills. Besides this, social studies student teachers should also be taught attributes of democratic teacher.The purpose of this paper is to examine perceptions of 50 social studies student teachers who are the final year students of social studies teacher education department of Fatih Faculty of Education at Karadeniz Technical University. A qualitative approach was used in this research to illuminate student teachers’ perception about democratic teacher. Data was gathered an open-ended questionnaire. In the light of gained data, it seems that social studies student teachers do not given an adequate education about democracy education and democratic teacher.
