Abstract :
Within the plural society in Malaysia nowadays, there is an urgent need for a closer understanding of manners and culture from different races. Attitude of being able to appreciate the courtesy and culture of different society is one of the ways to move towards unity. Description of courtesy as practiced by the Malays in their daily lives as observed by Sheppard in his book” Malay Courtesy “is hoped to contribute to the goal of multiracial unity. Content analysis method is used by the author to show the courtesy practice of the Malays in their daily lives around the 1950’s. This book will benefit the Malays themselves because inside is written good manners and ethical behavior of some of the old Malay which are no longer being practiced by the Malays, but it is something of value, which must be conserved by the Malays. The content of this book consist six chapters about the Malay courtesy: meeting and greeting, at home, harvesting season, marriage, the Friday prayers, as well as birth-death. From content analysis of this book, it appears that the Malays courtesy is manifested through discipline, good deeds, well mannered, behavior, speech, and wisdom. The reflection of values in this book consists of physical cleanliness, good practice, self discipline, respect, community spirit, gratitude and willingness, good neighborliness, cooperation, mutual help, generous, belief in God, responsibility, compassion, and sympathy.
