Wasiyat Tarekat Hadratus Syekh Hasyim Asy’ari dalam Kitab “Tamyiz al-Haq min al-Bathil”

This article highlights one of the historical roles of Hadratus Syekh Hasyim Asy’ari in renewing religious understanding in Islam especially through his thought about tasawuf (tarekat). Through content analysis on his work especially Tamyiz al-Haq min al-Bathil and his influence on his students, it illustrates his efforts to restrengthen “true Islam’ in the country which according to him at that time was shaken by the presence of a number of threats in the form of secular movement moved by the colonialists, Islamic rationalism by Abduh in Egypt and the threats of individual cults conducted by pantheism among the tarekat within the pesantren. His response to the last threat is seen through his critics and reminders on the practices of tarekat, tarekat teachers wali-ness and others as described by this writing. By knowing the position taken by Syekh Hasyim, in Asy’ariyah-Maturidiyah in theology and al- Baghdadi-al-Ghazali in tasawuf, his rejection of pantheis tarekat, and his critics on the concept of wali-ness leaning towards acculturation of tarekat teachers has placed Ahl as-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah and NU movement set-up by him on the main orthodoxy porosity. Through his critics and teachings he restrenghtened Islam and pesantren in Indonesia in continuum of Wali Sango tradition. The tasawuf which is regarded as compatible with its principles (Naqsyabandiyah) stresses on uplifting moral values and piousness in executing the teachings of Muhammad saw., and not the tasawuf relating to pantheism and syirik, but the one in line with the teaching of Sunni Islam. To safeguard his tasawuf principles, he stresses on a number of conditions for those who want to practice the teaching of tasawuf. To be more specific, one should always be guided on the aqidah-syariah-tasawuf line.
