Abstract :
This articlef ocuses on the study of the bronze drums which are a type of artifact that are relics of the Metal Age society in Southeast Asia. The uniqueness of this artifact is reflected in the decorative motifs and patterns that are displayed either on the tympanum or the body of the object. The obj ective of this study is to see the extent of use of the motifs that have the elements of geometry displayed on the bronze drums. In addition, this study wili also examine the extent of the frequency of use of the moiifs and also the implicit meaning behind the use ofthese motifs. This study uses the typology and comparative approach, namelyby making analysis of all the motifs and symbols which are of geometric elementthat are displayed on the bronze drums. The results showed that there arevarious types of motifs of geometric element that had been applied as thedecorative pattern of the bronze drums. Among them are the star motifs, trianglemotifs, saw motifs, tangential circle motifs, dotted circle motifs, spiral motifs,alphabetic motifs and many others. The motifs are not only diplayed on thedrums tympanum but also displayed on the body of the drums. Based onobservation, there are also similar motifs that are repeatedly used until theyreveal the uniqueness of this object. The combination of afew types of motifs ofgeometric element on the bronze drums not only shape the identity of thesebronze drums, but also shows the innovation and creativity of the Metal Agesociety that was more advanced in comparison to the society that existedbefore whether its the society of the Paleolithic or the Neolithic Age.
