Abstract
This article discusses Kedah’s economic development through Sultan Abdul Hamid as a legacy of the Malay Sultanate. Based on this correspondence, this economic pratice in Kedah comprised agriculture such as paddy, tapioca and rubber; livestock, forestry and mining. Research shows that economic activity contributes a lot to the Kedah development process which includes its infrastructure and communication. However, it has also affected negatively on Kedah political stability for instance financial crisis and the upheaval in the tin mines which transpired around 1888-1905. This information was discovered through Sultan Abdul Hamid’s correspondence which was considered as evidence to the involvement of local dignitaries like Sultan Abdul Hamid and his ministers in the Kedah economic system. Moreover, the use of British source such as Kedah Annual Report solidifies its authenticity.
