Abstract :
Objective: To determine the association of C-reactive protein as low grade inflammatory marker in type 2 diabetic nephropathy. Study design; Cross sectional comparative study Place and duration: Study was conducted at diabetic clinic of general medicine in Pakistan institute of medical sciences over a period of 12 months Materials and methods: Type 2 diabetic patients coming to diabetic clinic in Pakistan institute of medical sciences were included and after informed consent were divided into two groups A and B on the basis of absence or presence of diabetic nephropathy by measuring 24 hour urinary proteins. The association of low grade inflammation was done by measuring CRP levels Result: Out of 108 type 2 diabetic patients 38(35.2%) were male and 70 ( 64.8%) were females with mean age of 47.8 +10.22 years. They were divided in to two groups on the basis of 24 hour urinary proteins. C reactive proteins were found to be raised in 52 (96.2%) patients with diabetic nephropathy as compare to 7(12.9%) diabetic patients without nephropathy with statistical significance of .000. Considering other risk factors age, gender, raised sugars and hypertension were found to be similar in both the groups meaning having no major influence on the propagation of type 2 DN however deranged renal functions, anemia were found to be statistically significant in the type 2 DN patients with p value of 0.000,0.000 respectively Conclusion: The c-reactive proteins are raised in patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy hence suggesting that low grade inflammation is the cause of development and progression of the renal disease in type 2 diabetic patients.
