VENUES OF TURKISH THEATRE; FROM TENTS TO PALACES

Karagöz, Meddah and Ortaoyunu constitute indispensable parts of Turkish theatre history with the elements of oral tradition and comedy, ritualistic roots and dramatic representations in their forms and contents. They are different types of performing arts that have developed their own venues through open spaces, tents, curtains and stools. This paper aims to analysize those venues that they were identified with from the sixteenth century to the last decades of nineteenth century and within this analysis, it aims to look at Ottoman festivities, courts and coffeehouses.
