SAPONATED CRESOL POISONING IN CHILDHOOD

A 22-month-old child with 18% bums following the oral and dermal contact of approximately 60mls of a disinfectant containing 50% saponated cresol is described. She developed electrolyte derangement, ocular and haematological manifestations and was treated successfully. The need for public enlightenment on promotion of the safe use of household chemicals and prevention of accidental poisoning in childhood through Information and education campaigns is advocated.
