Pre-emptive Pediatric Renal Transplantation

Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). [1] In the year 2000, more than 27,000 kidney transplants were performed worldwide, [2] of which approximately 1500 (5%) were in the pediatric age group. [1] Accord­ing to the USRDS data, the number of primary pediatric transplants performed in the United States in 1995 was 373 cadaver and 392 living related transplants.
