Abstract :
Figurative language is a language that has implicit connotation, which go beyond literal meanings of the words. Textual analysis of three Malay short stories entitled Tapah, Gok and Setelah Kabus Dinihari were deploy in this study using qualitative data analysis. The main focus was personification element of figurative language. Personification is an element of figurative language that assigns the qualities of a person to something that is not even alife. In figurative studies, the relationship between language and the accuracy of things that being referred were questioned. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the implicit connotation of figurative language in Lim Swee tin’s Malay Short story. Relevance Theory of Sperber and Wilson (1986) were utilized in order to enhance this study. The result shows that 45 personification data were found in those short stories. This study strived that personification is a way of style and author’s ability in order to convey ideas that might capture the readers. Thus, presents more poetic in short story language.
