Online Delivery of a Mathematics Course in a Distributed Environment: The Case of the University of West Indies Distance Education Centre

This article is a descriptive case study. The authors reflect on the experience of the University of West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC) in its pilot delivery of a mathematics course. In so doing, the authors discuss the background to the delivery of the course, describe the structure of the course and review the experiences and possibilities of offering the mathematics course online. The purpose of the study is to highlight issues which can suggest potential areas of research rather than to make causal connections. The methodology is largely qualitative, based on the reflections of the course administrators, with supporting information from data obtained from student evaluations of the course.
