Awangku Merali: Mengembalikan Timur kepada Timur

Writers are subjects socially constructed by society. Thus, reading the works of Awangku Merali can be likened to a process of understanding indigenous society within the historical period of 19th century British colonialism when neo-colonialism permeated society in the form of internal colonialism, subaltern voices, occidentalism, and nationalism. This study employs Post-Colonialism theory to analyse Awang Merali’s short stories and drama scripts as Post-Colonialism discourse is obvious in his works.This analysis indicates that Awang Merali not only showed defiance to the West, but also displayed a tendency to ambivalence as is often the case among post-colonial indigenous populations
