Abstract :
Technology advancement saw the new media play an important and dominant role compared to traditional media , especially with the presence of social media platforms, including online social networking. This study examines the trend in social networking use among Malaysian active users. A survey to 369 respondents show that more people are use social media technologies with the majority having more than one account or social network profile and logging in a few times a day and spend one to two hours in each session or up to 20 hours per week to communicate or social integration and interaction purposes—besides information sharing,entertainment, convenience factor, and formation of identity. It is also found that the use also provides some forms of gratification. The findings further show that the respondents seemed to agree that the media is an extension and addition to the offline interaction and that it would replace other communications media in the near future
