Abstract :
The aim of this study is to evaluate age, sex, localization and distribution of supernumerary molar teeth seen in jaws. Distomolar and paramolar teeth were diagnosed according to clinical and radiographical examination among the patients who were admitted to department of dentomaxillofocial radiology, faculty of dentistry of Ankara University between june 2008 and august 2010. Data such as demographic variables (sex and age) localization, eruption status, unilateral or bilateral position of supernumerary molar teeth were recorded. Supernumerary molar teeth were diagnosed in 28 patients. 15 (53.6 %) of them were male and 13 patients were female. A total of 39 supernumerary teeth were found. 34 of them were in maxilla, 5 of them were in mandible. 34 teeth were extracted, rest of them were left in situ. Beside the detailed clinical examination, panoramic screening should be preferred for radiographical evaluation in diagnosis of distomolar and retromolar teeth which are not common in jaws.
