Abstract :
Complete dentures are still the main treatment options for the majority of edentolous patients. Oral candidal infections of denture wearers are called ‘Denture stomatitis’. This condition is known as the most commen oral opportunistic infection. The most effective way to prevent and treat denture stomatitis is denture disinfection. The disinfection method must provide an effective disinfection while being compatible with the prosthetic materials. In light of this information, we evaluated the effect of a microwave disinfection procedure on surface roughness properties of two different denture base resins. In this study, we measured the surface roughness of a conventional heat-activated (QC-20) and an injection molded (SR IVOCAP) denture base resin before and after the disinfection procedure. Square shaped specimens are immersed in water and irradiated with 650 W power for 3 minutes. Surface roughness is measured with a profilometer. According to the results of this study, microwave procedure used is a reliable method of disinfection for both resins regarding surface roughness.
