THE DISCOURSE OF MALAY IDENTITY THROUGH UPIN IPIN ANIMATION SERIES EPISODE : DUGAAN DAN NIKMAT

This research discusses the Dugaan dan Nikmat episode in Upin Ipin animation series. The purpose of this research is to identify the strengths and props of Upin Ipin animation that would contribute to the creation of Malay identity concept in other animation series. This research used both qualitative and quantitative method. A questionnaire has been given to 20 samples consist of students from the 2D Animation Certificate course from Segamat Community College. The questionnaire contained information on their level of knowledge, awareness and practice of Malay identity. The animation series was analyzed using the Malay identity concept approach. The concept are seen through the same language spoken, similar cultural practices and identical ways of living. The research shows that all three concept are connected to each other to create a story with Malay identification element. The value of Malay culture is reflected in the Upin Ipin animated series because through this local animated series Malaysia is able to introduce the uniqueness and identity of the country. The success to combine all three theories will create an excellent production of Malay animation series. Therefore, this research is hoped to be the starting point in the development of Malay identity model in animation series production in Malaysia as well as improving the Malay identity discourse through animation series.
