Abstract :
Open space sculptures, especially monuments have important roles on constituting a common memory and urbanizing consciousness by symbolizing important events or conditions and in this context they create varied dialogues with their environments. In historical development process the roles of open space sculptures have been differanciated with changing social dynamics. With emerging of Renaissance in Europe, sculpture has expressed itself in real meaning and moved to urban squares independently. As for Turks, monuments and sculptures have been met since VI A.C. but this tradition couldn’t continued later terms. In Republic Term it continued with Atatürk monuments. In placing of open space sculptures, the relations with physical and social environment must be considered. The social relations of the sculpture with the environment have been investigating on; subject, chronology, usefulness and socio-cultural acceptance. The phsical relation between sculpture and its environment have been examined from the wiewpoints of volume, form, material and placing. Konya Atatürk Anıtı has been investigated from these viewpoint. In this context important problems have been observed especially from the wiewpoints of volume and spacing. Imperceptible borders of the space and its being open to the vehicle traffic are the clear indications of these problems.
