Abstract :
Diabetes mellitus is a major health problem for bothpatients and the population because of its high mor-tality and morbidity and high costs of therapy. By theproceeding technology and sedative lifetyle and obesitybecoming widespread, diabetes is becoming more andmore frequent throughout the world. 90% of individualswith diabetes mellitus have type 2 diabetes. Obesity, particularly central obesity is a common risk factor. The effect of diabetes on the morbidity and mortalityof subjects affected by it necessitates a comprehen-sive approach of primary and secondary prevention.Screening for diabetes is recommended every threeyears in people at or above age 40. Earlier andmore frequent screening is recommended for high-riskpatients. The recommended screening test is fastingplasma glucose. Given the high prevalence of macroand microvascular complications, even at the time ofdiagnosis (almost 50%), diabetes complications mustbe thoroughly screened for and additional risk fac-tors (e.g. dyslipidemia, hypertension, microalbuminuria/proteinuria) aggressively treated. Therapy often beginswith modification of lifestyle and diet and frequentlyrequires treatment with antihyperglycemic agents.
