Abstract :
Introduction: With the advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the
possibility of observing anatomic parts of living persons at different age levels,
it is now possible to answer many questions in the field of anatomy more carefully.
The present study was conducted to determine and record the dimensions of various
parts of the cerebellum and also to compare the values obtained for dimension with
height of healthy people by MRI.
Methods: This was an experimental study carried out on 300 healthy individuals
referred to imaging center at Imam Reza hospital in the city of Kermanshah, Iran.
The inclusion criteria was the approval made by in-house physician based on
person’s state of health and the absence of any pathological lesion in brain on the
basis of images obtained by MRI. After performing MRI, The dimensions of target
parts in cerebellum were calculated by the MRI-associated measuring system and
recorded along with the height of the patients. Measurements were recorded in mm.
and based on selecting the largest height, width and length of the organ during the
examination of all axial, sagittal, and T1 coronal profiles.
Results: In general, the mean size of different parts of the cerebellum recorded in
mm. was as follows: The height of tegmentum of cerebellum in men and women
were 21.10 and 20.35, respectively. The height of ventricle of cerebellum was 24.96
in men and 23.72 in women. The length of cerebellum in men was 21.40 and in
women 21.10. The length of ventricle in men and women were 16.85 and 16.77,
respectively. The length of tegmentum of cerebellum was 4.57 in men and 4.40 in
women. Finally, the transverse length of the ventricle of cerebellum was 27.30 in
men and 26.52 in women.
Conclusion: Based on data found in present study, the transverse length, length of
tegmentum of ventricle, height of ventricle and height of tegmentum in men were
larger than those in women. Considering our findings, significant relationships were
demonstrated between the age and the transverse length, length of tegmentum of
cerebellum and also the height of ventricle of cerebellum in men. No significant
relationship between the cerebellum and age in women was established.
