Abstract :
Introduction: Epilepsy is the second most common neurological disorder after
stroke but is still little understood. The incidence of single seizure in general
population is 5%; whereas epilepsy developed in 1-2% people. The main purpose in
epileptic patients is control and interruption of their seizure. Aim of this study was to
find the prevalence of provoked agents in both epileptic and single seizure group.
Methods: 331 patients with generalized seizure were referred to Neurological
Emergency Room of Shiraz Namazi Hospital were collected. Their data was
collected by a questionnaire.
Results: 92.7% of all patients had at least one provoked agent. The most common
provoked agents in the epileptic group was withdrawal or decreasing anti epileptic
drug (AED) (41.4%); emotional stress (36.4%) and insomnia (34%) were second and
third respectively. The most common provoked agent in the single seizure group was
using of tramadol (42.6%); insomnia (40.2%) and emotional stress (34.2%) were
second and third respectively.
Conclusion: Putting all these words together, we should mention that with the high
prevalence of provoked agents before convulsion among epileptic patients, it seems
to be possible to control the seizure disorder with elimination of these agents from
their lives, rather than increasing the dosage or even adding a new drug.
