Abstract
In this study, an assessment of andesites exposed in the vicinity of Sarnıç Village (Havran / Balıkesir) consists of their weathering - decomposition process. First of all meteorological and geological properties of the study area are summarized and detailed field studies are carried out in andesitic rock masses with different weathering grades. During field studies, representative rock blocks are obtained from each weathering grade of andesites for laboratory studies. Thin sections and rock samples are prepared from the rock blocks obtained. Then physical and mechanical properties are determined for each weathering grade of andesites. Laboratory test results are statistically analyzed and a weathering classification is proposed for the andesitic rocks in the study area. The proposed weathering classification includes quantitative data such as λ which is accepted the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to apparent porosity (λ =σci/n), loss of ignition (LOI), Schmidt Hammer rebound value (SHV) and qualitative data such as textural and structural properties of rock masses in the field. The λ values given in proposed weathering classification are compared to the different λ values obtained from the studies executed by different researchers on andesitic rock masses. In consequence, some suggestions are given about the possible usage areas of the investigated andesites in industry.
