Abstract
Hypertension and its related conditions such as coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure and chronic kidney disease is a growing public health issue for which successful treatment often remains inadequate. Approximately half of hypertensive patients who despite treatment are unable to reach target blood pressure levels for a variety of reasons including nonadherence, adverse drug events, polypharmacy and patient resistance to a lifelong regimen (1, 2). A small but important percentage of these patients with uncontrolled hypertension fail to meet therapeutic targets despite taking multiple drug therapies (three or more) at the highest tolerated doses, a phenomenon called resistant hypertension (2). New therapeutic approaches are particularly relevant for these patients as their risk of major cardiovascular events are high due to uncontrolled hypertension (3).
