Effects of Education Based on Health Belief Model on Nursing Implication in Patients with Diabetes

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate patients with diabetes education provided in accordance with the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the impact of maintenance practises. Method: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled experimental study between September-December 2012. Sample group have been occurred, voluntary, aged 18 and older, non-communication problems, 25 experimental and 25 control patients. Data collection, questions about the socio-demographıc characteristic, the HBM scale in patients with diabetes, Self-efficacy scale for the management of diabetes mellitus in patients and metabolic control form for follow up were used. Structured individual and group training was conducted for experimental group. SPSS 17.0 software package was used for statistical analysis. Findings: Between the experimental and control groups in terms of socio-demographic characteristics and diabetes-related characteristic no statistically significant differences were found (p 0.05). Metabolic control values in the experimental group were significantly decreased after training (p 0.05). HBM scores and self-efficacy scores of the patients in the experimental group were statistically significant after training (p 0.05). The experimental group of patients, health beliefs, and self-efficacy score was determined to be a high degree of correlation (p 0.01). Conclusion: The individual-specific structured training education using HBM Scale and the Self-efficacy Scale may be beneficial in terms of improved patient compliance and metabolic control results.
