Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors of Nursing Students

Objective: This study is carried out as a descriptive study to determine the healthy lifestyle behaviors of nursing students. Methods: 336 nursing students who enrolled in vocational courses during 2009-2010 Educational Year Spring Term at Hacettepe University Faculty of Health Sciences Nursing Department constituted the sample of the study. 281 students who accepted to participate in the study after they are informed about the study and filled in Healty Life Style Behavior Scale II was included into the study. Data was collected by Demographical Characteristics Form and Health Life Style Behavior Scale II. Results: According to the findings obtained from study, while the maximum score which can be taken from the scale was 208 points, the average scores of the students were found 136.12±19.16. The mean score of students’ interpersonal relations subscale has the highest value as 27.12±4:05. With an average of 16.87±4.88 subscale score the physical activity has the first lowest value, with an average of 19.80±3.73 subscale score stres management has the second lowest value. Conclusion: In our study, there is statistically significant difference between students’ Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale II mean scores according to their socio-demographic characterics, the frequency of going to health centers and oral/dental health center, the frequency of doing sport activities and participating in social activities, nutritional habits, having chronic diseases or status of their family members’ having chronic disease. However, there is no significant difference between Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale II mean scores of the students according to number of their family members and the amount of using cigarette.
