Abstract :
The study analyses the existence of role conflicts and role ambiguities among information technology (IT) personnel in the government sectors in Malaysia. In addition, this study attempts to determine whether there are any differences between role conflicts and role ambiguities within demographic factors such as gender, age, management group and job tenure. Role overload and task satisfaction are also examined to determine their correlation with role conflicts and role ambiguities. A total of 250 IT personnel from selected governments departments and agencies within Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya area are sampled out using random sampling method. This Study confirmed the existence of role conflicts and role overload among IT personnel in the government sectors. However, the overall level of role conflicts and role overload is low. There is significant difference of role conflict between gender and age. However, IT personnel do not experience role ambiguities, but instead show high role clarity in the scope of work, work objectives, responsibilities and role undertakings. The findings also show that there is some correlation between role overload and role conflicts but no significant correlation between task satisfaction and role conflicts.
