Abstract :
Thepresentstudywasdesignedtoexploretheeffectivenessofmotivational,metacognitive,andtechnology-basedscaffoldinginde-velopingEnglishasaforeignlanguage(EFL)inIranianlearners’writingability.Asampleof60EFLlearnerswasselectedtoparticipateinthisstudywhowereselectedbasedontheirperformanceonthePreliminaryEnglishTest(PET).Theselectedparticipantswererandomlyassignedtothreeequalgroupstakingthepretesttomeasuretheirwritingabil-ityatthebeginningofthestudy.Inthetechnology-basedscaffolding,softwarewasdesignedbyacomputertechnicianconsistingofdiffer-enttasks.Inthemotivationalscaffoldinggroup,thewritinginstructionwasbasedonactivities,whichstimulatedlearners’motivation.Inthe metacognitivescaffoldinggroup,scaffoldedinstructionofwritingwasintegratedintometacognitivestrategies,whichwasdesignedtoassistlearnersinplanning,monitoring,andevaluatingascorecomponentsofmetacognitivescaffolds.Finally,theparticipantsofallgroupswereaskedtotaketheposttestofthestudy.TheresultsofstatisticalanalysesshowedasignificantdifferenceamongdifferentgroupsindevelopingIra-nianEFLlearners’writingability.Motivational-basedscaffoldingwasshowntobethemosteffectivetechniqueinenhancingEFLlearners’writingability.
