MALAY LITERATURE PROGRAMME AT ACADEMY MALAY OF STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA IMPLEMENTATIONS AND CHALLENGES

The Malay Literature course in education are getting less attention in higher education institute and also schools simply because most of the students nowadays prefer the practical based courses or the courses that meet the current market’s requirements. This has caused the literature courses does not get the student’s attention. The Malay Literature course is supposed to be given more improvements and adjustments in order to fulfill the current market’s requirements in this information technological era. Therefore, this paper will discuss further the implementations and challenges faced by the Malay Department, University of Malaya in offering courses with the current social needs and employability. Courses to be introduced would be Literary Editing, Commercial Literature and E-literature Learning. All the courses will have basic introductions in the aspect of literary contents, in modern or traditional literature in different practical approaches. This would be in line with the notion of making the Malay Literature as a field of “skirting the roots reach for the sky.” This will explain how those courses have transformed the Malay literature’s scope and context especially in getting more attention and widely preferred among the young generation. This also could help the Malay literature to be evolved and developed together with other courses. Based on the research, it is shown that the literature courses are up to date hence the communication needs to be enhanced as these types of courses will give additional values such as editing skill and multimedia skill. Besides, these courses could also give better insights to Malay literature without having to omit the beauty and uniqueness of its context specifically.
