Abstract :
This study aims to analyse the stylistic aspects or style of language in a classical Malay text, the Hikayat Abdullah (1849), by Munsyi Abdullah. This text has been transliterated to romanized script reorganised by Kassim Ahmad (2004) SpRBM61 ISTAC version. Discussions of style on this text, proposes a notion that Munsyi Abdullah’s work had left implicit elements of language arts in the literature. The change of language in Abdullah Munsyi writing is also associated with poor Malay language education and his background that descendant Tamil. Language data were analysed using descriptive research method. Analysis of the data based on framework of the stylistic by Leech Short (2007) to explain language phenomenon from linguistic point of view with literature function. There are two focuses of this framework, namely lexical category and figurative. All of these linguistic elements are described by meaning component approach Leech (1981) such as conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, affective meaning, social or stylistic meaning, reflected meaning and collocative meaning. The result shows that author still retains creative language style in terms of lexical usage that abstracted to implement the meaning. For the metaphorical language category, the lexical and grammatical patterns to show meaningful alignment and assertion of event elements. The use of the trope explains how the author uses the environment element to display the events that occur.
