Abstract :
This study discusses the transformational aspects of Ulik Mayang performance. Ulik Mayang tradition has undergone various changes in terms of performance structure. The objective of this study is to explain the original form of the Ulik Mayang performance to identify new elements in the present performance as well as the transformational aspects that have gone through. This study uses a qualitative methodology involving library research and field studies such as focused interviews as well as recordings of Ulik Mayang performances by Sukira group in Terengganu. The data collected were analysed using the concept of transformation to analyse the form of change of Ulik Mayang performance in terms of ceremonies, equipment, musical instruments and costumes. The results of the analysis found that there was a transformation of the structure of Ulik Mayang’s performance, namely the removal of elements of worship and mantras, the formation of gimmicks, as well as the use of props, musical instruments, and costumes that are more modern. The factors of Islamic development that have changed the way of life of the community has made the community very creative and have a high innovation in adapting traditional Ulik Mayang performances to a relevant performance and in line with the development of modernization. This transformation ensures the survival of this cultural heritage for the next generation.
