Abstract :
The waqf of Sultan Murad II was one of the largest waqfs in Bursa. It derived the major part of its huge income from rural revenue sources. This study looks at the financial situation of the waqf in the first half of the 17th century. During this time span, the waqf suffered some income loss due to the Celali movements and the harvest failures. However, the most significant factor which was burdening the financial situation of the waqf was the growth in employment and consequent rise in salary payments and kitchen expenditures. Although the waqf went through some financial issues they did not turn into a deep and long-term financial difficulty. This implies that the agricultural conditions did not deteriorate to the extent that they led the waqf into a financial crisis.
