Mary in Esoteric Interpretations of The Qur an

This article, focuses on how the Qur anic stories about Maryam (Mary) are interpreted in esoteric exegesis of the Quran. In summary, according to sufis, Maryam in the Qur an symbolises the purified soul (al-nafs al-zakiyya). Similar to the the fact that Maryam got pregnant to Isa (Jesus) without a father as a blessing from God and Isa spoke the truth while he was a baby in a cradle, a person who purifies his soul gives birth to the satisfied spirit and thus spirit speaks out from him.
