Prediction of Depression based on Early Maladaptive Schemas Mediated by Self-Compassion

World Health Organization has identified depression as the world’s most disabling mental health disorder due to its detrimental effects on mental health. In the present study, early maladaptive schemas were used as a basis for predicting depression among the housewives in Qom via the mediation role of self-compassion. A sample of 106 female housewives aged 35 to 50 was selected and completed an online questionnaire that included Young Schema Questionnaire-90 item form, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Neff’s Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). The bootstrapping mediation analysis approach was used to examine the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and depression, as well as the mediating role of self-compassion in this relationship. The path coefficient of early maladaptive schemas, and depression (.53, p .001), self-compassion (-.35, p .001), and self-compassion and depression (-.39, p .001) indicated a relatively mediating role for self-compassion in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and depression.
