Abstract :
Electric and magnetic field coupling between power transmission and sensitive instrumentation cabling can induce undesirable effects in the latter. In order to understand the coupling mechanisms it is first necessary to have a basic appreciation of Maxwell’s equations, which describe all electromagnetic behavior. Basic models are introduced to aid engineers visualize interactions, and bridge the gap between the theoretical and the real world problems. Power cable construction introduces core twisting which modifies the electromagnetic fields and hence complicates the interaction. Simplistic modeling techniques have only limited use in practical applications, and further development of more realistic and complex models are required.
