Abstract
The evolution or a novel form of single-phase switched reludancc motor, suitable for
example for high-spwd Tans is described. Thc nio&or has four shtor and Iʹour rotoy poles, but only
two coils. The new motor is dciivcd by simple :indysis from the basic 2-pole nxtcliinc using sweeping
assumptions. It is predicted to havc only half the core lciigtli, less copper loss, but significantly more
iron loss than lhc 2pole form. Thcsc conclusions fire tcslcd using coinputer-based ilnalysis, arid lest
results from a prolotype motor arc pirsented which con fiiin the attractiveness of the dcsign.
Attention then turns 10 the starting problcm of all aich tnachincs, arid a method using perinaiicnt
magnets is shown to bc patʹticulerly appropriate for the new molor. Tlic operation of this method is
analysed, and simulated sparling responses arc comparcd with experinieiital rcsul~s.
