Turning on the Hot Tap; The Art of the Analyst

The temperature variation in time and space is investigated in a fluid flowing within a pipe. Various approaches to the problem are proposed and it is shown that with deeper understanding, a numerical solution which gives a poor representation of the behaviour can be improved by analysis producing not only a more accurate result but also a factor of one hundred or so in speed of solution and hence computer effort.
