Abstract :
Indigenous construction technologies were transFerred from one generation to another through
training by participatIOn In all a~jJects oj construction. Trainees were required to master knowledge
oFmatenals, construel/on techmques and planning in so much detail that thev hardlv needed written
references. Today, .construction is more complex and has to be learned th;ough ; combination of
educatIOn and training. This paper discusses the problemsjacing contemporary construction training
and proposes facets which may be learnedjrom training in traditional societies in order to address
them. It concludes by emphasising that great attention should be paid to integrating construction
educatIOn and trmnlng.
