Abstract :
Low-cost houses in some South African coastal areas have shown a tendency towards forming condensation on internal walls and roofs during winter. Such condensation encourages the growth of mould, which can adversely affect the health of occupants. Both thermal simulations and physical investigations were employed to defined a new boundary in the Southern Cape region, where condensation is most likely to occur. The results of the study were used to establish a boundary running below the South Cape mountain ranges, from Malmesbury in the Western Cape to Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape. It is hoped that this condensation boundary will eventually enable authorities to focus on specific problem towns. Furthermore, the important links established between condensation, mould growth and health ailments will help provide the necessary motivation to ensure prompt action.
