Overview of the transmission line design process

An overview is presented for the design of overhead high-voltage transmission lines. Since most lines constructed by Los Angeles Department of Water and Power in recent years have been extra-high-voltage AC, this paper emphasizes the design of 500 kV AC transmission lines built in the southwest United States. Empirically developed practices are presented throughout the paper.
