Abstract
A dynamic model for a cross-flow dryer is used to analyze the response of the dryer to changes in the moisture content of the inlet product and to changes in two manipulated inputs: drying air temperature and grain flow. The mathematical model is solved using a predictor–corrector method. Experimental data of inlet and outlet moisture content of rice shows satisfactory agreement with simulated results. Contour plots of the dimensionless moisture content distribution is predicted during the initial transient period after start up of the process and for steady state. Steady state is reached after a period of one residence time. The effect of a step disturbance in the inlet product moisture on the outlet moisture content is also analyzed for different residence times.
