Abstract
Godunov’s method,a numerical method for solving conservation laws,is applied to
nonlinear and inelastic wave propagation in soil. The solution is restricted to the one-dimensional case. An
approximate Riemann solver for Godunov’s method is presented. The capability of the numerical method
is shown by a comparison with the analytical solution of a linear inelastic wave propagation. Finally the
behaviour of the nonlinear inelastic soil is described by a hypoplastic constitutive law.
