Approximating a cost-of-living index from demand functions: A retrospect

This paper discusses several methods for approximating a cost-of-living index that are based on knowledge of the demand functions. Centered around a recently discovered article by Malmquist, it discusses the mean of over- and undercompensation, Frischʹs Double Expenditure method, and some proposals of Vartia.
