Abstract
This article describes a new alternative for controlling rivers, by incorporating an RCC cofferdam into the design of a large concrete-faced rockfill dam (CFRD). This new concept, which is of proven validity from the mechanical point of view, helps to reduce submersion risks significantly during the construction phase, to the benefit of both the contractor and the owner. The stability of the cofferdam is analysed at each stage of construction and reservoir filling so as to ensure complete sealing between the cofferdam and its foundation. Particular attention is paid to the connection between the concrete face and the cofferdam.
