Interpreting ethnic fragmentation effects

Ethnic fragmentation indices, originally developed by linguists, have become increasingly commonplace in empirical economics. This note derives an interpretation for ethnic fragmentation effects based on a model of differential altruism, and reports the implications for empirical specifications.
