Abstract :
This paper shows that when price variations are not properly purged from the data, the estimated ratios of production variances to sales variances are likely to be biased upward, leading to more frequent rejections of the production smoothing hypothesis. The results point to the importance of removing price variations from the data before testing the hypothesis
