Globalization and unemployment: the role of international diversification

We demonstrate that international portfolio diversification can help to reduce unemployment. If workers earn a capital income that is negatively correlated with domestic labor demand shocks, the wage set by a monopoly union may be lower and thus expected employment higher than in the case of a positive correlation.
