Abstract
This paper investigates dynamic interrelationships between crimes of different severity. With Swiss quarterly time series data we find that an increase in minor crimes dynamically triggers more severe crimes without the reverse being true. As far as enforcement is concerned, a tougher enforcement of mild offenses not only reduces minor crimes, but also dynamically deters more severe offenses, as claimed by the ‘broken-windows-theory’.
