Reference type-independent heterogeneous social evaluation

The choice of the reference type should not influence the social evaluation of heterogeneous income distributions [Econometrica 71 (2003) 319]. Imposing reference type independence, we find a trade-off between the measurability and the functional form flexibility of the equivalent income functions.
